The Best Outdoor Trail Snacks

Do you have a taste for adventure? Find yourself hungry for a new experience? Do you feel like you’re starved for connection with the great outdoors?

Well then, you’re in luck! Killgore Adventures offers great outdoor expeditions in the great state of Idaho. But if you’ve got an appetite for adventure, it’s important that you feed your body too. Trail snacks are often an underappreciated food source. People will go out for a day or even a week and not realize how much they enjoy their favorite snacks until they’re absolutely craving them. But if you’re new to outdoor adventures, you might not be sure what kind of snacks to bring with you. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Take a bite out of this handy guide!

Bars

Just about anything you could ever want in a meal can now be found in bar form. Oats, honey, blueberries, and chocolate chips? Got it. Apples, bananas, peanut butter, and caramel? Yup. It’s all. Depending on which brand you buy, the right bar can offer you a huge quantity of protein and carbohydrates in one small, lightweight package. You’ll want to find a bar that doesn’t have much, if any, added sugar. Instead, look for options that have vitamins and minerals along with healthy fats. These bars will help your body stay fueled during your outdoor adventure.

Nut Butters

If there’s a nut out there, there’s a strong chance that someone’s made it into a delicious, nutritious butter too. In recent years, we’ve seen an explosion of nut butters, with options extending far past the classic peanut butter option. Almond butter, cashew butter, Brazil nut butter, coconut butter (okay, this might be a fruit) are all great options if you’re looking to try something new out on the trail. Nut butters are packed with protein and healthy fats and are a great way to replenish the calories you’re burning while adventuring outside. You can serve these butters on bread or just bring a jar and a spoon and indulge.

Fruits

When we’re starting to feel a little slow on the trail, we like to pull over and pick out a piece of fruit. Fruit is a great source of natural sugar, and these healthy carbs are an ideal way to provide your body with the quick-burning energy it needs to keep moving. Fruits of all shapes and sizes can be enjoyed out on the trail, but we’re also fans of dried and dehydrated fruits too. No matter how you choose to enjoy your fruit, make sure you pack out all of your skins, peels, stems, and seeds. It’s more than likely that the fruit you’re enjoying is not native to Idaho, and we don’t want local creatures to get sick from eating these foreign fruits.

Jerky

An all-time trail favorite, jerky is an awesome source of protein. Your body uses protein as a long-lasting fuel source, ensuring that you can power through mile after mile on your next expedition. Jerky is also a great source of salt, which your body actually needs a quantity of to stay hydrated. Don’t eat too much jerky, however, as your body will need more water to feel in peak condition. We enjoy jerkies made from both meat and vegetable sources.

Cheese

Slices, shredded, sticks, and singles, cheese comes in many forms and flavors and all of them are welcome on the trail. Cheese is one of the most nutrient and calorie-dense foods you can bring with you and is also powered up with protein. We like cheese because it stores well, even when you’re outside for a long time, and can be paired with all of the other trail snacks we suggested above. You can bring slices or cubes, or you can simply bring a whole block and cut off pieces as you go.

Granola

More than just what you call someone who rocks Chacos all year long and drives an Outback, granola is one of the most perfect hiking snacks out there. It’s a nice choice for those looking for something a little sweet and crunchy. It’s also rich in fat and calories, both of which you’ll need while out exploring.
