A Brief Guide to Snowshoeing in Idaho

Perhaps one of the best reasons to visit Idaho is that there’s an adventure to be had all year-round. I the warmest days of summer, you can keep cool with an awesome jet boat ride through Hells Canyon. In the fall, explore the changing colors on the back of an ATV or RZR, and in Winter you can break a sweat by taking part in any number of winter sports, including snowshoeing.

Here at Killgore Adventures, when the waters of the Snake and Salmon Rivers are too cold for exploration, we love to hit the trails on a pair of snowshoes. We’ve explored our fair share of the state this way, so here are some choice spots to visit!

Castle Rocks State Park

Near the Idaho-Utah border, you’ll find the incredible Castle Rocks State Park. Renowned for its plethora of outdoor recreation opportunities, in wintertime you’ll find cross country skiers, ice climbers, and snowshoers alike exploring this beautiful landscape you’ll find dozens of trails that take you to some truly spectacular views in the process.

Upper Dry Creek

Located not far from Boise, the Upper Dry Creek is a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts all year long. This spot is closed to motorized traffic, making it a great place to get away from the noise and stress of traffic. Within the upper Dry Creek watershed, you’ll find trails stretching from one mile to four, making this a great place for morning or afternoon long excursions, or simply a chance to learn the basics and form of snowshoeing.

Bogus Basin

Despite the name, there’s nothing bogus about this snowshoeing area. Just north of Boise, Bogus Basin is a great option for those looking for snowshoeing options that are close to home. You’ll enjoy 4 miles of dedicated snowshoeing trails, plus access to the 17 miles of nordic trails within the basin. For a snowshoeing experience that you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else, make sure to visit the basin at night. The trails are lined with solar-powered lamps that brighten your way on even the darkest of winter nights.

Schweitzer Mountain Resort

In Sandpoint, you’ll find the Schweitzer Mountain Resort, known for its stunning views and sprawling open spaces. For those looking for a fun way to learn how to snowshoe, the resort offers guided tours on weekend mornings, starting at 10:00 a.m. Your guide will show you how to best travel on snowshoes, as well as give you insights into the area’s natural and cultural history.

For those who have some experience on snowshoes already, the resort offers an impressive 20 miles of trails that are tailor-made for snowshoe and ski traffic.

Harriman State Park

Take a trip to the east side of the state and you’ll find Harriman State Park. Part of Island Park, Harriman hosts an expansive connection of trails, running more than 25 miles. Visit on the weekends and you’ll find a series of trekker huts that are kept warm to help you defrost after hiking a section of the trail. All of the trails are very well-marked, and many of them are groomed, making it a great place for beginners to practice their snowshoeing skills.

Mink Creek

For a snowshoeing experience that will feel like taking a trip on the wild side, take a trip to Mink Creek. Located in the Pocatello area, this landscape is a great spot for not only snowshoers but nordic skiers as well. With a huge area to explore, plus seven parking areas, there’s room for snowshoers of all skill levels here. Plus, you’ll save money on your trip when you visit Mink Creek. The trails aren’t groomed, meaning you don’t have to pay for a trail pass to explore here. If you’re in need of the right gear, make sure to stop at the East Fork Mink Creek Nordic Center where you can rent your snowshoes and poles.
